Directing

Interested in being in charge of an SDS production? If so, we could offer you the chance to put on that play you’ve always loved and had a desire to direct.

You’ll be ably supported by the SDS committee and others throughout the process while enjoying the freedom to direct your play your way; you’re free to choose your preferred cast based on our open audition policy.

Even if you’re brand new to us you’re welcome to submit a play (or more than one) and take part in our yearly play selection process where plays and a pantomime are selected for the following season. The process usually begins sometime in spring each year - contact our play coordinator for the latest details and further information.

Production support

Along with the SDS committee and others, you’d be further supported by having a ‘production buddy’ assigned to you; this is someone who has experience of ‘the way things work’ with SDS having directed for us previously.

They’ll help you find your way around and assist in appointing your key production people such as a stage manager, lighting and set designer, props person, costumes and others.

Production process

On average each production has around a seven to eight weeks’ rehearsal period with three rehearsals per week.

You’d be guided by your buddy when to involve your other production personnel and how best to proceed to put on the best show possible, and we have various online resources to help you such as our regularly updated downloadable ‘Director’s Handbook’ - a document both new and established SDS directors find invaluable.

The team effort

We’re very much geared to the ‘team effort’ of various people contributing their skills and experience to maintain our high artistic standards with the director at the helm.

We’re fortunate that we attract very talented and enthusiastic people both on and off stage, so we’re confident your directing experience with us will be a positive experience.

We look forward to hearing from you!
