If you fancy ‘treading the boards’ with SDS, then it usually starts with an audition.

At the audition itself you’re asked to read extracts for the role - or roles - you’re interested in being cast for in front of a small casting panel led by the production’s director.

Who can attend auditions?

Anyone! 

Auditions are open to all so you’re more than welcome to come along and read whether or not you’ve worked with us before and irrespective of whether you’re a current member.

We’re always keen to see new people at auditions, and along with advertising in and around the Quay building, we try to get audition dates and details into the local press so more people get to know about them.

Can I learn more about the production before the audition date?

Certainly.

Scripts are available for short term loan about a month or so before the audition date, and audition pieces are often included and displayed on our website. There’s also usually relevant production information concerning aspects such as plot synopsis, production style, character notes and other details on the production’s website page.

What happens after the audition?

You’ll be notified usually within a few days whether you’re being offered a part or being invited back for a further audition if required.

When you’re offered a part and you accept, then we do ask you to become a member of SDS ideally by the time rehearsals start.

How far in advance of the production are auditions held?

Usually in the case of plays it’s around four months before the actual performance run and two months before rehearsals would start. For the pantomime, auditions are held a month more in advance than this.

Do I have to be a member of SDS to appear onstage?

Yes, preferably by the first read through/cast meetup prior to rehearsals starting. You can join online.
