If you fancy literally ‘running the show’ then why not become a stage manager? 

If you have experience that’s great but if not full training is provided.

As a stage manager for an SDS production you’d run the show once it goes into performance so effectively the director ‘hands over’ to you after the final rehearsal.

Running the show

Ensuring the show runs as smoothly as possible is the aim of course, and you’d supervise other people involved such as backstage assistants, props helpers and more - and you’d be in charge of the actors!

You’re not necessarily responsible for set construction directly, although ensuring a set or whatever is required onstage for a production ‘happens’ is in the stage manager’s remit. Sometimes a construction manager will handle set building.

If you’ve not been an SM before or maybe not for some while, full training is provided and you’re welcome to help out on a few productions first if you’d prefer to ‘work up’ to taking an SM role for one of our productions.

Backstage help

Backstage and assistant stage manager help is highly valued and a vital part of a smooth running production, so why not get involved in a general backstage role? Activities such as looking after props, re-setting for the next scene, general ‘errand running’ and more are just a sample of what's involved.

Don’t worry if you’re new to it as we’ll help you find your feet. Enthusiasm is basically the only requirement, although if you are experienced in backstage activities naturally we’d be delighted to hear from you.
