Getting On
by Alan Bennett
Director: Michael Harding
Getting On follows the home life of George Oliver, Labour MP, over a few months in the early 1970s.
George is getting older and the 1960s' revolutions have rewritten the post-war certainties. Blustering, overbearing, ultimately endearing, George rails against the new age, his teenage son and the gentrification of his own life. Meanwhile, his family and friends tiptoe around him, trying to frame meaning from their own lives.
Through his sparkling and witty script, Bennett gives us a timely reminder of an age before career and opportunities eclipsed principle and idealism.
